Telemarketing Scams and Identity Theft

 Do Not Call

Telemarketing fraud is a serious concern, especially for senior citizens who are often targeted. These scams often involve high pressure sales tactics in order to solicit an advance fee for services or items which do not exist.  Some common examples include counterfeit sweepstakes checks, real estate, travel vouchers, advance fee loans, and many others.  Generally these offers "sound to good to be true."  Why?  Because they are.

One way to help protect yourself is to remember that Federal Law has established certain standards of practice for legitimate telemarketers. These include only operating between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. and identifying that they are attempting to sell something.  Therefore, receiving a call outside these hours or attempts to avoid telling you what they are selling explicity, should also raise suspicion.

You may also considering getting registered on the "Do Not Call List," but also remember you must renew this every five years.  To register call 1-888-382-1222 or logo on at www.donotcall.gov. It takes 30 days to remove your name from telemarketing lists.

Until next time....Be Safe
