Board of Directors Present Seminar
The Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Utica hosted a Secure Living Online Seminar on Thursday, February 3rd, 2011. The seminar was made possible by Mr. Frederick Sadallah, who personally funded the event and brought the two organizations together. The event was taught by Secure Living's board of directors, Grandmaster Clifford Crandall, Eric Stalloch, Cheryl Freleigh, and Lynn Jessee with assistance from Mr. Arturo Santiago. Together they worked with eight individuals who ranged from completely blind to legally blind, teaching awareness, safety, and physical responses against assaults. Every participant was given a bound booklet with pictures and explanations of all the techniques covered, including additional techniques. This would help those with some vision retain what they had learned. It could also be used by the agency's staff to assist those without vision. In addition, the same booklet was translated into braille and presented to each participant, so those with no vision would have equal access to the same reference. The event was covered by local media. Watch the news story below:
The event was a great success, and it was a real joy to see the group's excitement in learning how they could protect themselves against common assault and robbery scenarios. The piece of mind and increase in self-confidence was clear. While the topic covered was of a serious nature, all of the participants had a lot of fun, and look forward to having another seminar this Spring.
