Some people are more likely to be targets for a robbery or assault because their profession involves traveling alone, carrying money, keeping late hours at the office, or other reasons. While a robbery may be a criminal's intent, it is important to understand that this scenario can quickly escalate into one of physical violence. Once a robbery commences, you are are literally "fighting for your life." There are many precautions that can be taken if your profession makes you a high risk target.
We tell children to use the buddy system but often neglect the same advice for ourselves. Having someone walk with you to your car can deter an assault. Have your keys out before you leave the building and park close if possible. Make multiple trips if it will allow you to keep your hands free. These are only a few of the things that most people would consider to be common sense. However, just because it seems logical and reasonable, doesn't mean that you follow your own instincts. When we are in a rush to get from one appointment to another or dealing with poor weather conditions such as rain or snow, we look for "short cuts." Despite all precautions, assaults may still occur. In these situations you must be prepared to take physical action to protect yourself.
It was these realities that led Shannon Thayer of Pure Romance, Inc. to host a seminar for her employees. Pure Romance, Inc. is under the direction of its CEO Patty Brisben. The seminar was held at Secure Living Online's training facility and instructed by board of director members Clifford Crandall, Eric Stalloch, and Cheryl Freleigh with assistance from additional staff members for more individualized instruction. The seminar was three hours in length (though there are 90 minute seminars available) and covered the safety tips discussed above and many others.
The participants also learned physical responses against common assaults including throat grabs, sleeve grabs, choke holds, and others. This included exercises for strength, balance and conditioning, cane techniques, working with punching bags, fundamental kicks, and other skills.
The seminar focused on Health, Awareness, and Physical Security skills. Check our blog later this week for a video of one of the techniques presented at this seminar. Until next time... Be Safe.
