Cane Clip

Wheelchair or Walker Users Can Carry a Cane

The Secure Living Online Board of Directors (and our instructional staff) have been presenting self-defense seminars for people with disabilities.  Later this week we will be posting a cane self-defense video and information covered at one of these seminars.  Today, I want to discuss one safety tip that we have been sharing at our seminars.  It involves a simple device called a cane clip.

Many wheelchair and walker users don't realize that they can carry a cane, too.  Having a cane immediately available allows you to use to help defend yourself.  A cane clip attaches to the frame of your wheelchair or walker and pinches your cane with the use of a spring and a rubber grip.  Many are commercially available and they are inexpensive.  In addition, if you do not use a wheelchair or walker, but carry a cane regularly, you may carry a cane clip in your pocket that can be attached to the side of a chair at a restaurant or other location.  This will let you keep your cane out of the way and close at hand, instead of propping it against a wall or hooking it over the back of a chair or on the edge of a table.  Just remember to bring it with you when you leave.
