Personal Safety Using a Cane

One of the most common types of physical assaults involves an attacker grabbing you with both of their hands to restrain you, to throw you against a wall or car, to shake you, or to throw you on the ground.  Understand that this ties up both of their hands and gives you a defensive advantage.  The technique below is just one way that you can get free from this dangerous situation.

Personal Safety for Blind or Visually Impaired

The desire to feel secure in your daily life is a fundamental emotion.  The ability to protect yourself is skill that you can learn.  This holds true whether you a child, teenager, adult, or senior citizen.  It is true if you are "able bodied," or if you live each day with the challenges of reduced mobility, hearing, or vision.  Being blind or visually impaired does not mean that you must relinquish control of your own personal safety and diminish your independence, especially when it comes to protecting yourself against a physical assault.

It is an unfortunate reality that the predators of our society will attack people whom they deem to be "an easy target," and this includes people with disabilities.  Secure Living Online's programs for people with visual impairments or blindness teach health, awareness, and personal safety for these individuals so they may feel better about themselves each day.  Below is an example of one of the techniques that we present in our seminars.  It utilizes the collapsible cane that many people with visual challenges carry every day.  It is just one of dozens of physical responses offered by our program, and it has made a real positive difference in their everyday lives.
The cane is held in your right hand, folded.  The attacker has grabbed your right upper sleeve and is demanding money.
Circle your right arm around so the folded cane rests on top of the attacker’s forearm.  This is done by moving your right arm away from your body, bending at the elbow, and bringing your forearm close to your body. Grab the other end of the folded cane with your left hand.  Pull down and toward you.
You now know the attacker’s head must be close to you at waist level.  Reach out with your left arm, feeling the back of their head.  Quickly, circle your left arm around their head so your forearm is under their throat.  Squeeze upward.
Use the strength of your legs, and stand up while holding onto the attacker’s neck firmly.  Be cautious with a practice partner.

It is important to understand that this is an example of one technique, and that you are seeing it here out of context from its presentation in a seminar.  During the seminar the subtleties of the techniques are explained, and the instructors work with each individual so they understand how to apply the techniques, the reasons they work, in what scenarios they would need to be altered, and how to practice them safely with a partner.
